Take-Me-Back Group Project

First of all, I want to thank my teammates dedication in this group project, although we did not make it perfect, but we all had a great time in creating a game together, and we also plan to develop this game in the future. Zhijun and Me were working on the interactive coding part in the project.

Inspiration:

Our group inspiration came from COVID-19 quarantine, as we all know, since 2020 it was a hard time for people from all over the world so far. Therefore, we hope everything could be track back to normal.

Gaming Process:

Our game scene happened in NYC railway station, when you start playing the game, you will see there is a button in the middle-bottom of the scene. After clicking the button. you will head to next scene. The second scene is in the subway, and player will see there is no body in the subway and things are messy in subway. Player can pickup and drop items in the game, and player can control the character by WASD and Space. To head to next scene, you need to walk straight ahead until in front of the door. The door will open and you can continue walking straight and then you will enter next scene. In the second scene of subway, you need to find a "EXIT" button to get everything back to normal. After finding the button, you will enter a scene, which there are people sitting on the chair or standing in the subway. When you exit the subway, you will see the weather is great and also you could hear the sound of the subway in this scene, which everything seems to be normal as usual. Then you could walk ahead to finish the game at the station.

Storyboarding

The storyboard was drawn by one of our teammate Kyle,

Game Scene:

Development Process:

In this project, Zhijun and me worked on interactive-coding part. Sarita and Kyle were working on the modeling part, since we all from different background, and we all comfortable of our part in this project. The coding part in this project was one of the heavy work in our group. We spent many time on debugging,  but to be honest there is still something that we couldn't solve so far.

 Play-testing feedback:

Sarita talked about the box collider problem in unity, and yes I also met that problem while I was playing the game, and because of the box collider problem, it affects our pickup and drop script, which when we pick up the item in the game and we cannot walk and hold at the same time. the character will walk through the item while player holding it.

Postmortem

Successes:

The modeling and the character action in our game was made successful. Also the animation in this game that we made was satisfied with. We have a nice team so we did not spent too much time on dividing the work. Guys are very passion and nice so that we could make this big task in a short time.

Failure:

The failures in this assignment were the debug part. As I mentioned in the previous process, I met problem in the pickup and drop script. I don't know why when I picked up the item and walk straight, I found that I will just walk through the item which the item will not walk with the character at the same time. I spent a lot of time in this problem so that I did not do very good in other parts, so I apologized to my teammates. In our plan, we had other functions in our game, but because of the "pick up and drop" bugs, we deleted many functions.

Lesson Learned:

To be honest, I did not solve the problem,  I think that is because the box collider in unity causes the problem, but after the class, I think that I should change my logic in "pick up and drop" coding, and I tried it in another draft of unity, it seems to be worked, so I decided to fix this problem in the future.

Future Development:

There are many things that need to be improved in this game, for instance, we need to have a loop function when we finished the game so that player can replay the game or just exit the game. We also planning to add more stages in the game and more functions so that the game will become more interesting and playable.
